Questions
Find answers to common questions about our LED products, installation, and ordering process.
LED Strip Lights
1. What voltage LED strip should I use?
For most domestic and commercial applications, we recommend 24V LED strips. They allow for longer runs without voltage drop and are generally more efficient. 12V strips are suitable for shorter runs and automotive applications.
2. How many LEDs per metre do I need?
The LED density depends on your application. For accent lighting and indirect illumination, 60 LEDs/m is usually sufficient. For task lighting or applications requiring high brightness, consider 120 or 240 LEDs/m. For dot-free lighting, COB strips with 480-840 LEDs/m are ideal.
3. Can I cut LED strip lights?
Yes, our LED strips can be cut at marked intervals along the strip. The cutting points vary by product – typically every 25mm, 50mm, or 100mm. Always cut at the designated points to avoid damaging the strip.
4. What colour temperature should I choose?
2700K (Very Warm White) creates a cosy, ambient feel. 3000K (Warm White) is popular for residential spaces. 4000K (Natural White) is ideal for kitchens and workspaces. 6500K (Cool White) provides bright, clinical illumination for commercial settings.
Installation
1. Do I need an LED driver?
Yes, LED strips require a constant voltage driver (power supply) to convert mains voltage to the appropriate DC voltage (12V or 24V). The driver wattage should be at least 20% higher than the total wattage of your LED strips.
2. How do I calculate the right driver size?
Multiply the wattage per metre of your strip by the total length in metres. For example, a 5m run of 14.4W/m strip requires 72W minimum. Add 20% headroom, so a 100W driver would be ideal.
3. Can I use LED strips outdoors?
Yes, but you must use appropriately rated products. IP20 strips are for indoor use only. IP65 strips are splash-proof. IP67 can be submerged briefly. IP68 is fully waterproof for permanent submersion. Drivers must also be rated for outdoor use.
4. Do I need an aluminium profile?
While not essential, aluminium profiles are recommended as they: dissipate heat to extend LED lifespan, protect the strip from damage, provide a neat finished appearance, and diffuse the light for a smoother look. They’re especially important for higher wattage strips.
Technical
1. What is CRI and why does it matter?
CRI (Colour Rendering Index) measures how accurately a light source reveals colours compared to natural light. A CRI of 90+ is considered excellent and is important for retail displays, art galleries, and anywhere colour accuracy matters.
2. What is the difference between SMD and COB LEDs?
SMD (Surface Mounted Device) LEDs are individual diodes mounted on the strip, creating visible dots of light. COB (Chip on Board) LEDs are embedded directly into the substrate, creating a continuous, dot-free line of light for a more uniform appearance.
3. Can I dim LED strips?
Yes, most of our LED strips are dimmable when used with compatible controllers and drivers. Single colour strips require a dimmer controller. RGB/RGBW strips can be dimmed and colour-changed using appropriate RGB controllers.
4. What is the maximum run length?
Maximum run length depends on the strip specification. Typically, 12V strips can run 5m from a single power connection. 24V strips can run up to 10m. For longer runs, power should be injected at multiple points to prevent voltage drop and dimming.
